It may be the oldest form of exercise but lifting your own weight has been brought bang up-to-date and is this year’s hottest fitness trend.

Body weight training is, quite literally, what it says, the use of your own body weight to improve strength and fitness, and according to the American College of Sports Medicine’s Worldwide Survey of Fitness Trends For 2015, it’s this year’s number one fitness trend.

Think push-ups, squats, lunges and, of course, the deceptively difficult plank, in which no external machines or equipment is used to strengthen and tone key muscle groups and you’ll realise that you’re already familiar with some forms of body weight training.

So what’s new?

Today’s body weight training has evolved from the humble push-up into a sequence of movements which target individual muscle groups creating a full body work out based around twisting, pulling, lifting, bending, squatting and lunging.

Why so popular?

The great benefit of body weight training is that as you are the equipment, you can literally do it anywhere. As more and more people find time pressures keep them from the gym, effective exercises you can do at home or at work are a great alternative.

Of course at Constance what this freedom from the need of gym equipment means is that you can take your workout outdoors. Squats, lunges, floor work all become more appealing if you can do them on the beach or your own private terrace looking out across the Indian Ocean.

Take a group class or ask one of our personal trainers to create a body weight work out for you and you will be able to carry on the good work when you get home (unfortunately minus the view!).
