The Art of Rum…

Belle Mare Plage main bar
Reading Time: 2 minutes

Mauritius is renowned for its high quality rum, with the island’s gentle hills providing the perfect conditions for growing sugar cane.

Inherent in the culture of the island, it’s also a part of our own rich heritage. The Constance group was originally involved in the culture of sugar cane back in the 1930s, which perhaps explains our excitement at the recent opening of a new single barrel of rum at Constance Belle Mare Plage on the east coast of the island.

This single barrel rum was distilled in 2007 in a French Limousin oak cask. A traditional rum, it has a molasses base and tastes rich and aromatic, lingering with an exceptional length in the mouth.

Leave the mini umbrellas and maraschino cherry for another day – this is a rum for when you want to feel grown-up. Enjoy after dinner and linger long while you savour the plum, cacao and coffee notes or try it in a classic signature Constance cocktail.

As rum leaves the Bacardi years behind, it continues to enjoy a revival as a more sophisticated drink. Guests at Belle Mare Plage have been enjoying it in this natural setting where it tastes its best – where the slight tingle of salt from the ocean mixes with the heady warmth of the Mauritian late-night air.
