A Look Back In History: Seychelles

Reading Time: 2 minutes

Constance Hotels & Resort is a place where luxury meets breathtaking beauty. Nowhere is a testament to this like the Seychelles, where you can find Constance Lemuria and Constance Ephelia. Seychelles is a stunning archipelago in the Indian Ocean, known for its crystal-clear waters, lush tropical vegetation, and rich cultural heritage.

Journey through the history of this location, and how it has become the magical destination it is today.

Early Seychelles Inhabitants

The Seychelles has a rich history, which dates back thousands of years. The islands were formerly inhabited by the Austronesian people, who were seafarers from Southeast Asia. They were followed by Arab traders, European explorers and the Portuguese, but it was the French who would later claim the islands as their own.

The French established a settlement in 1756 and named it after the French finance minister, Jean Moreau de Séchelles.

Under British rule, the Seychelles became a centre for trade and commerce in the Indian Ocean. After this, the islands remained under British control until they gained independence in 1976. Today, the Seychelles is a thriving island nation, known for its natural beauty, rich cultural heritage, and warm hospitality.

A Fusion of Flavour

The Seychelles is home to a diverse population, which includes people of African, European, and Asian descent. The Seychellois culture is a fusion of these influences, and it is reflected in the music, dance, and cuisine of the islands.

Guests can enjoy a fusion of flavours when dining, such as Creole-style seafood at The Nest, Constance Lemuria. Accompanied by entertainment, guests can truly immerse themselves in Seychellois culture at meal times.
