Get the most from your spa treatments

Get the most from your spa treatments

1. Prepare your nervous system and skin before each treatment

Arrive 10-15 minutes before your treatment and prepare your skin by taking a shower, steam, sauna, another steam and then a final shower. This will vitalise your skin making treatments more effective and allowing aroma oils to absorb more easily.

2. Give feedback to your spa therapist during treatment

Giving feedback to your therapist during treatment will help them discover areas where tension and knots have built up so that they can work more effectively and produce better results.

3. Pain is not always good

While it is good to feel that the therapist and the technique are strong enough to work out your knots, it is important that it is not too painful. Too much pain causes the muscles to tighten up after the treatment and cause discomfort. A more effective approach is to book 2 or 3 massages to focus on areas where tension has built up, as the muscles release the therapist can then work deeper and create more flexibility.

4. One massage is not enough to clear all tension from the body

To really feel the effects you should try to plan at least 3 massages over a week, particularly if you are holding on to a lot of tension. The key systems of the body (circulation, muscular, nerves) need time to reboot and each massage will work a little deeper.

5. Work with your therapist to create a Home Spa routine

Find out from your therapist what you can do to continue the benefits of treatments at home. Aromatherapy products, like those we offer at USpa, can be used in the shower or bath to help keep you stress free.

Hey, I just wanted to say how helpful this post was. My wife is always looking for tips on making the most out of my spa treatments. because she does not go to the spa often to get treatments, I really want to make the most out of each visit. I would say the most helpful tip for me was that one message just is not enough, I may have to get her into the spa more often!

I like your tip on how going to a spa only once will not be as effective as a few trips over a week or so. I would imagine that taking a whole week and going more than once could really help the treatment sink in and reduce more stress. I’ve been having a lot of stress at work recently so maybe I should plan some kind of spa week to help me out.

I have made the mistake of over stretching a muscle after a strain. I am sure that I made the injury take longer to heal. That is why I agree with the article when it says that too strong of a massage could make your body hurt more instead of relaxing it.

So true, people think that just because they are pressing hard and it hurts, that they are getting a benefit. Thanks for writing this. I will show to clients.

My friend and I are going to go to a spa soon and I would love to get the most out of the trip. That is a great idea to give feedback to the therapist during treatment. They would be able to work more effectively and help me get better results out of the treatment that way! Thank you for all the great tips!

I have never received a professional massage. I didn’t know that they are sometimes painful! I would love to get a massage; if I ever do, I will be sure to be communicating with my therapist so I have a comfortable experience.

You made a great point about prepping your skin for a spa treatment by taking a shower and even going in a steam room or sauna so that your skin can secure more benefits from the treatment. My sisters and our daughters are wanting to plan a trip to the spa over Christmas break to get facial peels. I will make sure that we prep our skin so that our pores are open and receive the full benefits.
