Leave Your Environmental Footprint Behind

Reading Time: 5 minutes

Amidst the pandemic, we have had the chance to think and reflect on our actions and the planet we are living on. At Constance Hotels & Resorts, we aim to provide “give back” activities so our guests can be part of protecting our beautiful environment.

Immerse yourself in this blog, discover more about these activities and prepare to feel inspired…

Reusable Water Bottles

As a commitment to positive environmental practices, we offer the chance to purchase our very own reusable water bottle.

This water bottle is the start of change and allows us and you to spread awareness about the environment and the importance of reusing, reducing and recycling.

Being a Green Globe Certified Company, we believe that even a small “Green” effort towards preserving the natural beauty of our planet can create a big impact.

Wetlands Management At Constance Lemuria

At Constance Lemuria, we aim to improve the management of the biodiversity within the resort and the surrounding areas by enhancing the collaboration between the resort and community partners.

Guests and community members can immerse themselves in the beautiful wildlife at Constance Hotels & Resorts. Through regular planting activities in the mangroves, guests can engross themselves in the breathtaking natural beauty of the resort.

Our aim is to inspire guests with the work we are doing and how we are protecting the beautiful environment we live in.

Educating The World Of Tomorrow

At Constance Lemuria, children can enjoy a free visit to Vallee de Mai where there are recycling and planting activities ready and waiting for them to take part in.

This exciting opportunity provides the younger generation with the chance to learn about the botanical gardens and even get a chance to feed the tortoises.

Not only this, but they will also have the once in a lifetime experience to participate in watching the baby turtles get released back into the ocean with our expert turtle manager.

Coral Plantation at Constance Moofushi

The beautiful underwater nature is a spectacle, and at Constance Moofushi we care deeply about the life that lives under the deep blue.

Coral restoration is one example of our acts of sustainability at the resort and enables the recovery of our beautiful coral reef.

The coral reefs provide an important ecosystem for life underwater, and they help to protect coastal areas by reducing the power of waves hitting the coast. The stunning coral reefs also provide a crucial source of income for millions of people through ecotourism and local fishing.

Our coral adaptation program allows us to share with guests the importance of this ecosystem, as well as getting them involved in our restoration efforts.

Q&A With Erica

Are you intrigued to find out more about our fascinating coral planting activity at Constance Moofushi?

Then you have come to the right place. We asked Erica, our marine biologist at Constance Moofushi all about our coral plantation project…

Is The Activity For Guests?

“Yes, guests are welcome to take part in coral planting during their stay at Constance Moofushi. The guests will work alongside me to create their coral frame and to move it into the ocean.”

Who Can Do It?

“These coral frames can be sponsored by individual guests or a group of people. Upon each frame there is a serial number and guests can add a dedication tag with either their name or a special message.

The serial number helps us to identify the frame during maintenance and to send photo updates every six months.”

What Are The Requirements To Take Part?

“In order to make the activity accessible to everyone the activity mainly happens outside the water.

It consists of attaching fragments to the frame and helping the marine biologist to bring them to the water.

Everybody can participate in the coral project, as there is no particular diving certification required.

I will take care of all the process from collecting fragments underwater, to setting up cable ties on the frames. However, if any guests are willing to participate in all the steps, we can discuss this.”

How Much Does It Cost?

“We have 3 different sizes of frames:

  • Small size: 175$
  • Medium size: 300$
  • Large size 500$”

Who Should You Contact?

“The guests can discuss the sponsorship directly with Erica during the stay at Constance  Moofushi or contact her in advance at marinebiologist@moofushiresort.com.

We have different areas for coral frames. A coral nursery and a dive site just next to the arrival jetty. These are the best areas for our frames, as they are at the right depth (5-6 meters).

The dive site is used by our diving centre for training and introduction to diving. Guests can practice their skills while enjoying the beautiful view of our coral project.

Last year, some of the frames of the Honeymoon Jetty side were moved to a drop-off area in front of our pool. This area is deeper and with more current for corals and we are still monitoring these frames.”

Type Of Corals You Plant

“We normally try to combine different species of corals on the frames to increase the chance of success. They are mainly branching corals. The most used ones belong to the family Acroporidae and Pocilloporidae (Acropora verrucosa, Acropora digitifera, Acropora humilis, Pocillopora verrucosa, etc.).

Corals used for the transplantation process are found broken naturally by storms or fish, or accidentally by humans.”

Expectation Of This Experience

“Coral restoration’s main aim is to rebuild the ecological function of coral reefs, such as giving a home to diverse animals and maintaining biochemical cycles. Corals are responsible for the sequestration of CO2 from the atmosphere and oxygen production by the microscopic algae living in corals’ tissues.

The opportunity to offer this activity to guests helps us to raise awareness about the critical condition of our ocean.”

What Are Your Targets?

“At the moment, we are focusing on the existing frames. Our aim is to maintain them and replace all the dead fragments with new ones.”

The world is a beautiful place and we are proud of the environmental activities we offer at Constance Hotels & Resorts.
