The trend for far-flung destination weddings is growing but once the excitement of the wedding day is over, why not stay for an exotic honeymoon. Last year, according to ABTA, 1.5 million of us travelled abroad to take part in a wedding (either as a guest or as part of the wedding couple) but what that figure doesn’t show is how many actually stayed after the wedding to really experience their exotic location.

Champagne breakfast on your private deck

More and more couples travelling abroad to get married are opting for a ‘weddingmoon’, scheduling the wedding at the beginning of their stay and then including time afterwards to enjoy a proper honeymoon at their chosen destination.

Making the most of the location

If you’ve yet to tie-the-knot you might not be quite prepared for the excitement, adrenalin and, sometimes, nerves you’ll experience in the run up to the big day. You might be in a luxury villa with a beautiful view of the Indian Ocean but be too preoccupied to really appreciate it.

Booking time after the wedding day gives you the chance to really drink in the destination; enjoy champagne breakfasts on your terrace, sunbathe, dine under the stars, snorkel, scuba dive and try out the raft of other activities available.

A cultural adventure

If you choose to get married somewhere exotic then it’s worth taking the time to get to know the place. Make sure you really explore your destination, rent a bicycle or take a boat out and discover your very own secluded spots, favourite beaches and scenic views.

Even though 5* resorts make it tempting to stay put and lap up the luxury, and we really don’t blame you for doing so, a great way to really get the feel of a place is to visit a local market or village and meet some of the locals.

Island hopping

Island hopping in the Maldives

If you’ve chosen one of the beautiful island nations of the Indian Ocean for you ‘weddingmoon’ then why not take your exploration a step further by splitting your stay between two islands.

For example, those getting married on the capital island of Mahé in Seychelles at Constance Ephélia could then relax for the remainder of their stay with the slower pace of life on neighbouring Praslin at Constance Lémuria. Those getting married amidst the elegant luxury of Constance Halaveli in Maldives might then enjoy kicking back and enjoying the barefoot chic of Constance Moofushi.

For a flavour of some recent experiences at Moofushi have a look at these Tripadvisor reviews.

jimi l called it: “The most amazing, perfect honeymoon!” She said: “It’s taken us exactly 1 year to review, because our trip was just so incredible and everytime I began to write, I didn’t feel my review did justice. We spent a week here as part of our honeymoon and the entire trip was just perfection!”

Quinn87 said: “Paradise really does exist!” after an inspiring honeymoon. “We have just spent 11 nights at Moofushi for our honeymoon and it couldn’t have been any better. What an incredible place… I can’t thank the team at Moofushi enough for a wonderful honeymoon. There were a few tears shed when the team waved us off on our seaplane back to Male.”

A gourmet experience

Another hot trend for honeymoons this year is gourmet travel and there’s no reason why this can’t extend to a ‘weddingmoon’. Indulge in the world-class cuisine on offer at your hotel with its fine-dining twist on the national cuisine and then explore local restaurants to discover unusual local delicacies.
