The Indian Ocean island of Mauritius is basking in sunshine at this time of year, as we gear up for a festive season of champagne on the beach, tropically infused dinners by the poolside and days spent with our loved ones. Along the quieter East coast, there are hidden treasures that are a far cry from the tourist hot spots of the west and north.

We love the East coast of the island – here are 5 reasons why we think you’ll love it too.

At Constance, you’ll find two 18-hole championship golf courses just a short shuttle ride from each other. You can spend your morning on the course before walking back to the beach for a languid afternoon of relaxation. The courses are challenging in the best way – perfect fairways and the excitement of offshore winds that demand you hone your tactical approach.  On the Legend course holes 1, 2, 4, 9 and 18 have been remodelled, reshaped and raised. Book a lesson with a pro and skill up your technique. Find out more.

3. Walk along unspoilt beaches

The East coast has remained untouched by mass tourism and has an unspoilt beauty compared with the manicured west coast. Some of the island’s best beaches are along this stretch of the island – including the famous Belle Mare Plage, the 2km stretch of white sand beach where you can walk along the paddle friendly shoreline looking out to the reef along the horizon.

4. Visit local markets

The village of Flacq is a great place to go on an early Sunday morning to find treasures to bring back home with you. Beautiful fabrics and pashminas, locally crafted jewellery and musical instruments. Wander through the market, soak up the atmosphere and immerse yourself in the local Mauritian culture.

5. Activities you may never have experienced before

East coast of Mauritius is great for watersports

Hire a bicycle, go horse riding or try out quad biking. You can ride along the quiet roads here, fringed with sugar cane, through tiny fishing villages flanked by the ocean on one side and the mountains of the hinterland on the other. A little further to the south, Etoile Reserve is a vast landscape where you can try out quad biking or horse riding through green hills, mountains and rivers where deer roam wild.
