Windsurfing in the Indian Ocean: Discovering the power of the sea

Reading Time: 2 minutes

Mindfulness may be a buzzword right now, but its message couldn’t be more relevant to the way we live our lives today. Simply put it is the act of focusing our attention on the present moment without judgement, rather than re-playing the past or ‘pre-living’ the future. Easier said than done, but with intention and purpose it can be achieved – and the benefits include a greater enjoyment of the world around us and a better understanding of ourselves.

Learning a new skill like windsurfing is the essence of mindfulness. It engages our bodies, our senses and challenges us technically, making it far easier to focus on the here and now. It’s hard to worry about something that might happen six months down the line when you’re being lashed with sea spray and trying to keep hold of the sail!

Is it for me?

But – you may be thinking – surely an ‘extreme’ sport like windsurfing is far too complex and inaccessible for a mere mortal like me? Not so, and here at Constance Hotels and Resorts we can help you achieve more than you ever dreamed possible, whether you’re a seasoned adrenaline junkie or a total beginner who’s never tried any kind of watersport before.

Even one or two lessons will help you understand the basics – like how to prepare your board and position yourself, how to use your body to pull the sail out of the water, how to fill the sail with power, and how to adjust your course. You might find it difficult to begin with and you’ll probably fall off once or twice, but every mini-victory comes with a massive sense of accomplishment. You’ll be growing in confidence in no time.

Where to try

Mauritius in particular is an especially good place to get on the water. Conditions for windsurfing are varied and optimal, from shallow and totally flat lagoons for beginners to big wave experiences on the outer reefs for the more advanced. And of course, you have the added bonus of an incredibly scenic backdrop and a huge range of other activities to keep the rest of your party occupied. Conditions in the Seychelles are also ideal, particularly from May to September when the winds pick up on the southeast coast.

Live for the moment and discover the exhilarating sport of windsurfing for yourself. Enjoy complimentary equipment hire plus (payable) lessons at all Constance Hotels and Resorts in Mauritius, Seychelles and Maldives.
