A day in the life of a spa trainer

Ajay Kishtoo, spa trainer, Le Prince Maurice

Ajay Kishtoo

Ajay Kishtoo’s working day as a spa trainer is varied and exciting. Here’s a look at a typical day for Ajay at Constance Le Prince Maurice, Mauritius.

I wake up at 6am and have a light breakfast. I have to be ready to catch the hotel bus by 7am. Once I arrive at the hotel, I check the schedule for the day, help the therapists with the set up and organise training with the staff.

Launching a new treatment

Today, I’ve got a long day ahead of me as we’re finalising the last assessment for a new treatment we’ll be offering – Fusion Massage. Fusion full body massage is inspired by occidental and oriental massages like Thai, shiatsu and Swedish.

The treatment launches tomorrow, and we have to make sure that all our therapists understand the benefits of the treatment and are able to use the different movements confidently.

Before we launch a new treatment, our therapists and receptionists experience the massage themselves so they really understand what they’re selling.

My inspiration

It was my mother who inspired me to get into this type of work. She has a real gift for healing people who suffer from back pain. She’s never trained formally but she’s helped so many people during her life.

Seeing my mother doing something that makes her so happy has inspired me and my brothers. We used to pretend to do massage on each other. Little did we know that later in life we’d develop a real passion for our work as therapists. Together, we’ve created a school for youngsters who want to train in this type of work.

What I really love about my job

What I really love about my job is the notion that I’m sharing my knowledge with people but also learning from others. All therapists have slightly different techniques and views, and it’s good to take these on board and to share our thoughts with each other.

I enjoy every moment of my day in the spa – particularly the sharing, and seeing the satisfaction of a client after their treatment.

Before you leave for your Indian Ocean paradise, it’s essential that you give your feet a few treatments.

1. Use a coarse-grained salt scrub twice a week in warm water to remove any hard skin.

2. Soften the skin on your feet with a thick nourishing cream, applying in circular movements until its absorbed.

3. Once you arrive at your Constance hotel, make an appointment with us at the spa and treat yourself to a foot treatment. At Constance Le Prince Maurice, the Guerlain spa offers a beauty foot break, the ultimate luxury for your feet.

One of our most popular beauty treatments is the nutmeg facial massage. Your beautician will massage certain points to give your face a ‘natural lift’.

Many guests are so pleased with how they look after the treatment, they return to the spa several times during a holiday.

Your beautician will also teach you some self-massage tips, using the whole nutmeg, so that you can continue the beauty treatment once you’re home.

Give it a go – the results are truly amazing.

At Spa Constance you can indulge with this utterly relaxing massage that will have you drifting off into a state of total relaxation.

Bango Bango is a deep massage that works on the basis that the body, as well as the mind, stores memories, patterns and behaviours.

Bango Bango massage aims to release any deep-seated tension caused by these habits that can cause stress, muscle pain, toxin build-up and poor posture.

The massage incorporates long, continuous strokes and the massage therapist uses oils and their fingers, thumbs, palms, elbows and arms to eek out any pain and discomfort. Bango Bango massage will set you back on course, instilled with a fabulous sense of well-being and calm.

Remember – you’ll get more from the treatment if you talk to the therapist about how much pressure you want them to use when giving you a massage.

One of the things that makes the Constance Hotels Experience so special are the people who work there. So often the staff at Constance receive a special mention in the customer reviews we get on TripAdvisor, or in feedback sent by guests.

At Constance, we put a lot of time into training. Our Constance Hotels Training Academy, based in Mauritius is the hub for all staff training. Over the last 13 years, we’ve become a leader in the hospitality training sector.

Many of our staff come through our apprenticeship scheme, and have worked with us for over 10 years.

All this helps to make the Constance Hotels Experience so unique. When you stay at a Constance hotel, the staff very quickly come to know what you like, which makes you feel you’re being personally looked after.
