Santiago Luna relives past glories with a win at St Andrews

Spanish golfer Santiago Luna won the SSE Scottish Senior Open at the Fairmont Resort, St Andrews, last weekend, one point ahead of Sam Torrance.

Despite a determined battle from former Ryder Cup Captain and designer of the Fairmont course, Torrance, Luna finished on five under par taking the victory by only one stroke.

The win marks a dramatic return to St Andrews for Luna who famously beat Tiger Woods on the same course in the Alfred Dunhill Cup back in 1998 to put Spain through to the final.

For Torrance the SSE Scottish Senior Open marks his first top five finish since the MCB Tour Championship, held at Constance Belle Mare Plage in Mauritius, in 2011.

Following a flawless round of 69 giving him an aggregate of nine under par at Refrath, Germany, he was able to hold off German golfer and home favourite Bernhard Langer.

Tinning made his debut at the end of last year’s tour at the MCB Tour Championship held at Constance Belle Mare Plage, Mauritius.

After a career plagued by accidents and injuries in his youth, Tinning has put his current Ironman training to good use to raise his fitness and as a result was able to join the European Senior Tour last year.

Bernhard Langer is currently leading the European Senior Tour Order of Merit 2013 and looks well placed for a place at the MCB Tour Championship this December.

The two British golfers battled it out on the Swiss Bad Ragaz course with Spurgeon ultimately drawing level with Wesselingh forcing the pair to play extra holes. It was only a birdie on the third extra hole, the 18th, which secured the win for Wesselingh.

Kevin Spurgeon is no stranger to dramatic battles having fought hard to win the MCB Tour Championship held in Belle Mare Plage, Mauritius, back in 2009.

This latest win places Wesselingh at the top of the European Senior Tour Order of Merit after just four events this year.
