Thai massage at Constance Hotels

Our spa trainer at Constance Le Prince Maurice, Ajay Kishtoo, shares his knowledge of Thai massage and what you can expect from a treatment at Constance Hotels.

Thai massage, also known as yoga massage, consists of deep massage and stretching movements.

The therapist uses his hands, elbows, knees, feet and entire legs to move the client into a series of yoga stretches. No oils are used in Thai massage. The client wears comfortable clothes, and the massage is performed on the floor on padded mats. Getting Thai massage may feel like doing yoga without having to exert yourself.

History of Thai massage

Thai massage, like traditional Thai medicine, has been influenced by Indian and Chinese traditions of medicine. In Thai, it is called nuad boram, which means ‘ancient massage.”Thai massage has been a medical specialty for over 2500 years, since the time of the Buddha. To this day, there are a lot of variations of Thai massage from different regions inThailand.

What happens during a Thai massage?

Thai massage is performed solo or in a group. You will change into comfortable, loose clothes provided by the massage therapist and lie down on a firm mat on the floor. The therapist will push, pull and stretch you into many different positions during the massage. Many stretches and movements are similar to traditional Western sports massage, to lengthen your muscles and release compromised joints.

The massage therapist leans on your body, using her hands and elbows, and applies firm and rhythmic pressure. The therapist follows the ‘sen’ lines, comparable to meridians in traditional Chinese medicine or nadis in Indian medicine.

The therapist walks on you using her feet and heels. The therapist also uses her legs and feet to fix your body and limbs in necessary positions while you are being stretched. A full massage typically lasts 2 hours or more. It consists of rhythmic pressing, pushing, pulling and stretching of your entire body including fingers, toes and ears. The massage follows a standard sequence.

Benefits of Thai Massage

Thai massage stretches your muscles, releases tight joints and increases range of motion. It improves circulation and reduces stress. You will feel relaxed, centred and energised.

Precautions

You should not receive Thai massage without first consulting a doctor if any of the following apply:

  • you have an infectious skin disease, rash or open wounds
  • after chemotherapy, radiation or surgery
  • you are prone to blood clots or if you have heart disease
  • you are pregnant (you would also need a Thai massage therapist who is certified in pregnancy massage)
  • you have bruises, inflamed skin, unhealed wounds, tumors or recent fractures – Thai massage should not be performed directly over the affected areas, so advise your massage therapist of any such wounds.

Tips

Arrive at least 15 minutes early so you can relax and fill out necessary forms in peace. Let your massage therapist know your complete health history and any health conditions that need special consideration. Don’t eat a big meal right before the massage. If you feel pain or discomfort during the massage, let your therapist know immediately so they can adjust their treatment. After the massage, drink a lot of water.

Spa treatments at Constance – Reflexology

Our Spa Manager at Constance Le Prince Maurice, Sophie Demaret, takes a look at the health benefits of reflexology.

Reflexology is an ancient holistic therapy that began in China and Egypt.

During a reflexology treatment, the reflexologist will use their thumbs and fingers to massage reflex areas on the feet that are associated with glands, organs and other specific areas of the body.

Releasing toxins and improving health

When the human body is in perfect equilibrium, we call this balanced state ‘homeostasis’.

Reflexology is the art of fine-tuning every part of the body to achieve a state of equilibrium or homeostasis in the body, and so maintain perfect health.

During or after a reflexology session, toxins may be eliminated in various ways such as through sweating, diarrohea, a runny nose or coughing.

What conditions can reflexology help with?

Reflexology has been shown to be beneficial to people experiencing a number of conditions including:

  • stress, anxiety and insomnia
  • migraines
  • digestive disorders such as Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS)
  • lower back pain, neck pain and shoulder pain
  • high blood pressure
  • arthritis
  • PMS, hormone imbalance and infertility

At Constance Hotels Experience, we offer reflexology treatments at our Spa de Constance.

Constance stays on top of latest spa trends

Our Spa Manager at Constance Le Prince Maurice, Sophie Demaret, shares her experience of a recent visit to a spa exhibition in Dubai to learn about the latest spa trends.

Sophie Demaret

Sophie Demaret

Travel is about having the opportunity to share experiences and to discover unique places. We always return from travelling with new ideas and it was a great experience for me to go back to Dubai.

I used to work in Dubai 30 years ago when it was just desert. I couldn’t believe what it was like when I returned. Everything was so perfect. When I left the airport to take a taxi, I was greeted by a woman from Ethiopia, dressed in pink, driving a pink taxi that’s exclusively for women!

So, climbing into the taxi, we drove to the exhibition where I spent 2 very busy days having one-to-one meetings with prospective suppliers of every spa product imaginable, including linen and equipment. All the luxurious details that make your spa experience so special.

One of the most important parts of my job as Spa Manager is managing relationships – with guests, suppliers, employees… At the exhibition, I was able to meet with very enthusiastic suppliers who provide the things we need at Constance Hotels to make the spa experience for guests a truly luxurious and memorable one.

At the end of the event, we were invited to an incredible ‘white party’ event – thank you Shadiha. Her attention to detail was amazing. The same kind of attention our guests expect when they visit our luxury hotels.

Watch this space – we’ll be keeping you posted on new products and treatments we’re introducing over the coming months.
