Top dive sites in Mauritius

The warm waters surrounding the island of Mauritius make it an ideal year-round diving destination.

Fish in Indian Ocean

Underwater world of the Indian Ocean

Here’s a look at some of the top dive sites on the East and North West coasts of the island.

Belle Mare Plage

The dive school at Constance Belle Mare Plage caters for beginners right through to qualified divers.

Small numbers go out on the boat to the reef that’s a short distance off Belle Mare Plage, or the lagoon off Constance Le Prince Maurice.

Here, you can expect to see beautiful corals and large shoals of colourful fish. You may get a chance to see the rare stone fish, dolphins, guitar shark and turtles, as well as whales further out to sea during the winter months.

In addition to the incredible underwater creatures you’ll see, the service you get both diving and on board the boat is everything you’d expect from a 5* luxury hotel.

Ile Aux Cerfs

Scuba diver and shoal of fish

Incredible underwater world of diving

The tiny island of Ile Aux Cerfs is renowned for its sandy beaches and calm waters. The coral reef is beautiful and brimming with marine life.

You can arrange diving trips to the island either from your hotel, or once you arrive at Ile Aux Cerfs.

Grand Baie and Trou aux Biches

If you’ve already explored the East coast, and want to see more of the underwater world of Mauritius, head to the North West coast, where you’ll find some great dive sites including Whale Roc, Lost City, The Tube and Waterlilly.

Expect to see huge numbers of fish, corals, rays and sharks. There’s a wreck of a Japanese fishing boat at Stella Maru, just in front of the reef. Here, an abundance of sea life have made this their home over the last 15 years.

Top 10 beaches in Mauritius

Situated in the Indian Ocean, the island of Mauritius is surrounded by turquoise sea, flanked by hundreds of white sand beaches.

Here’s our list of the top 10 must-see beaches in Mauritius.

Grand Baie beach, Mauritius

Grand Baie beach, Mauritius

1. Grand Baie

On the sheltered north coast, Grand Baie is teeming with hotels, restaurants and shops. It may not be the quiet spot it once was but it’s definitely worth a visit and has a magnificent beach. You can enjoy watersports and deep sea fishing from here too.

2. Péreybère

One of the most popular places for swimming on the island is the northern beach of Péreybère. Popular at weekends with local Mauritians, the water is beautifully clear.

3. La Cuvette

Close to Péreybère is this gem of a beach. It’s a small, horse-shoe shaped beach with glass-like water. There are shady spots under the trees dotted along the top edge of the sand. Get here early at the weekend as it’s popular with local people.

4. Belle Mare Plage

On the peaceful East coast is the beach belonging to Constance Belle Mare Plage. This long stretch of beach gently curves around the bay, and faces directly out to the reef beyond. The water is calm for swimming. Catch amazing sunrises from here if you’re up early enough, and at night you can enjoy some fabulous star gazing.

5. Roche Noires

North of Belle Mare Plage along the East coast is the beach of Roche Noires. Black volcanic rocks line part of the water’s edge, wedged deep into a long stretch of white sand. Calm water makes it safe for swimming. The east coast gets the offshore winds in the winter, making it a good spot for sailing.

6. Blue Bay

In the south-east of the island, near the airport, is the well-known Blue Bay beach. Soft sand, clear calm water and shady spots make this beach very popular at the weekend. Further along the beach are some rocks, from where you can head into the water for some great snorkelling.

Gris Gris beach, Mauritius

Gris Gris beach, Mauritius

7. Gris Gris

The south of the island is home to the most dramatic beaches on the island. Top of these is the breathtakingly beautiful Gris Gris. From the cliffs above you can look down to the wide stretch of sand below, and the large waves as they come pounding into the shore. It’s not safe to swim here but walk along the shell-filled beach and shoreline, and feel your spirit soar.

8. Pomponnette

Children playing on Pomponnette beach

Drive west along a winding road through small fishing villages with colourful houses, verdant vegetation and Hindu temples until you reach the long beach of Pomponnette. Untouristy and quiet, the water’s calmer here than at Gris Gris but still be careful when swimming.

9. Flic en Flac

This small village on the West coast is popular with tourists. You’ll find a growing hotel and restaurant trade, as well as dolphin watching tours. The white sand beach is popular at the weekend.

Surfers at Tamarin Bay

10. Tamarin

North  along the West coast is Tamarin bay. Tamarin isn’t protected by the reef, so the sea is rougher here than at Flic en Flac. But that makes it ideal for surfing, and long walks along the sand. The Tamarin river forms an estuary here, backed by mountains to the East.

Top 5 kids activities to do on a beach holiday

If you’re planning a beach holiday with your family, we’ve learned a few things about kids activities at our resorts – so here’s our top 5 to help you out:

Constance Hotels Experience

Constance Hotels Experience

1. Water parks

Age range: 4 years and up

Children (and adults) of all ages love water parks! First and foremost, it’s an outing, but what kids don’t love wave pools, giant slides, crazy rivers, inflatable tubes to sit in and a myriad of water slides to play on?

Many water parks also have other activities, like bumper cars. There are more relaxed pools for parents who don’t like the hustle and bustle and of course, there’s space to sunbathe.

We often run excursions to water parks twice a week because parents and children demand it, so if you’re planning a family holiday, check out the nearest water park

2: Crab hunting!

Age range: 4 – 12 year olds

Crab hunting is a fantastic activity for children on a beach holiday. Whether you’re staying at a luxury resort or are having a quieter family holiday in the sun, kids always enjoy hunting for crabs.

For most children, crab hunting isn’t something they can do in their everyday life. It gives them a chance to play in the sand with a purpose. And crabs claws and their sideways shuffling always gets kids going!

Make it a competition if you’ve got more than one child – they love to see who can catch the most crabs. Also, you don’t always have to do it in the day – children love crab hunting by torchlight on the beach!

At Constance Hotels, we know how popular this activity is because we run crab hunting as an activity for children staying at our resorts like the Belle Mare Plage resort in Mauritius. It’s not just the children who ask for more – parents often come back and book their children in for a repeat activity.

Diving - fish underwater

3. Scuba diving!

Age range: 8 years and up

Not all beach resorts will offer this service, but it’s great to get children initiated into Scuba diving while they are still young. Discovering life underwater is both educational and fun – and they love discovering that they can breathe underwater.

At the Constance Belle Mare Plage Resort, there is a dedicated Dive Master that will take maximum 5 children and the activity will take place in the pool in the shallower sections. Other beach resorts will have their own children’s dive schools and instructors, so find out before you go.

Finding flowers on the beach

4. Make flower necklaces!

Age range: 4-7 years

Children love searching for things, so how about creating a game of flower necklaces. First of all, your children need to search for flowers – preferably of different kinds. You could incorporate an educational aspect about the different flowers if you like.

Once the flowers are collected, you can then help them make them into wonderful flower necklaces for a fashion show!

At Constance Belle Mare Plage kids’ club, our hostess shows the children how to prepare their necklaces after they’ve found their flowers. For those who did not search for flowers – usually boys – the hostess will show them different tattoos. It is harmless for the skin and easily washable.

Even if you aren’t at a resort with a kids’ club, this is an activity the children love – and it’s free and easy.

5. Go local!

Ages: any age (4-12 for Dancing in Mauritius)

If you’re travelling abroad, what local customs could your children get involved with? Food, fun, dancing? Most places have local customs or traditions that are fantastic for your children to get involved with.

For example, in Mauritius, our hotels run Sega Traditional Dance of Mauritius classes. Children get to learn and rehearse a traditional Mauritian dance for a week before putting a show on for their parents – and other hotel guests! They get to dress up in traditional costume, dance and have a fantastic time. The parents love it and the children gain confidence from being in the show.
