Daily Mail’s Carol Driver is won over by Constance Halaveli

With so many activities and such a rich marine life to explore, travel writer Carol Driver is wowed by how much there is to do at Constance Halaveli.

Giant Mantas in the Maldives

In her piece for Travel Mail Online, Driver admits, ‘The Maldives had never been on my radar – perhaps for all the wrong reasons. I had visions of being bored, stuck on a tiny island.

‘However, with an outdoor tennis court (which has been graced by none other than Roger Federer), and the possibility of windsurfing, kayaking, wakeboarding, water skiing or heading out by catamaran, Halaveli has enough to keep even the most active occupied.’

What really excited Driver was the excellent diving in the area around Constance Halaveli, including the dive site Fish Head which she claims is the ‘most famous dive site in the Maldives’.

In her time at Halaveli Driver was thrilled to have her first encounter with a shark and to swim alongside a giant Manta.

She was also impressed by Halaveli’s accommodation claiming it was ‘indulgently spacious, with a bedroom, an entrance area and a bathroom that has an extravagant stand-alone bathtub.’

Mimi Spencer: the Kickstart Fast Diet at Constance Le Prince Maurice

Mimi Spencer, co-author of number-one best-seller The Fast Diet, introduces a new way to inspire healthy living and weight loss: the Kickstart The Fast Diet programme at Constance Le Prince Maurice hotel in Mauritius.

Mimi Spencer

It’s blissfully warm outside. Gentle waves lap upon the white sand. Excuse another cliche, but palm trees really do sway in the tropical breeze. Life at Constance Le Prince Maurice, as anyone who has visited will know, is pretty special – relaxed, cosseted, sophisticated. Heaven. It’s also a place dedicated to the senses, with its fabulous food, exceptional spa and staff who seem to know what you want before you even realise it. Smudged sunglasses? There’s someone on hand to polish them. A pillow menu, madam? A personalised pedicure? Not a problem.

Where better, then, to embark on a new and healthy lifestyle? The service and attention to detail you find in all the Constance resorts – dotted across the Indian Ocean like so many pearls – is precisely why Constance Le Prince Maurice works so brilliantly as a place to Kickstart the Fast Diet. As many of you will know, the Fast Diet and the 5:2 method have been the hot topic of 2013; the simple and enticing idea behind it all is that for two non-consecutive days each week, you slash calories to a quarter of your usual daily intake. For a woman, this means 500 calories over the course of a Fast Day; for a man, it’s 600. But for the other five days, there is no dieting, no fretting, no real concern for calories at all. Which makes it the ideal fit for the Prince Maurice, devoted as it is to good living.

But there’s so much more at the hotel to dovetail with the 5:2 approach. The Spa de Constance offers indulgent treatments, an ideal complement to a health and weight-loss regime. While I was in Mauritius to develop the Kickstart programme, I saw Dajee for shiatsu and reflexology – an excellent, grounding experience and a great boost on a Fast Day. The Sisley facial was another hit – cleansing, invigorating, rejuvenating – and all in the calm embrace of one of the world’s finest spas. There’s personal fitness instruction here too, and sunset yoga or stretching sessions with Isabelle Lamant, one of those teachers who somehow inspire you to stretch that little bit further, reach that inch more.

Guests who wish to follow the Fast Diet during their stay can try a low-calorie cooking lesson with chef Al Youhn (Constance Le Prince Maurice prides itself on its people power) and, of course, eat delicious Fast Diet dishes from the kitchen of Executive Chef Michael Scioli. We’ve worked on the menus together to offer plenty of low-calorie, nutritious Fast Day options – sashimi, salads, fish fresh from the lagoon – and healthy choices for days when you don’t want to fast, but you do want to eat well. Days, perhaps, when you might order the odd glass of champagne and take in that glorious view…

Fly fishing in Mauritius

Those who dream of fly fishing the clear tropical waters of Mauritius need to research the best spots to cast their flies.

Constance Le Prince Maurice

Constance Le Prince Maurice

Local fishing methods can mean that some species such as Bone Fish are hard to find when fishing from the shore and a guide with information of the local area is invaluable.

Barachois Natural Fish Reserve

One of the best spots on the island for fly fishing is the beautiful mangrove-lined natural salt water fish reserve at Constance Le Prince Maurice.

Fishing on the ‘barachois’ or lake is restricted only to guests of the hotel and as a result there is still good fishing for Bone Fish, Mullet, Barracuda, Carangue and Guil Pavé in the lake.

Guests are advised that the best fishing is early morning (around 6am) or in the afternoon (around 4pm) depending on the tide.

Fishing beyond the reef

Mauritius is surrounded by a beautiful reef and while fly fishing within the reef can be limited, fantastic fly fishing can be done from the reef itself casting out into the water beyond.

To do this you will need a boat to take you to the outer edge of the reef where you can stand to cast your fly into the waves breaking on the reef. The kind of fish you can expect to catch this way include a range of Trevally including GTs.

St Brandon’s Atoll

Over 300km from the mainland the St Brandon’s Atoll is a group of small islands which offer some of the best Bone Fish fishing in the world.

Charter a boat for the journey and fish from the island’s vast white sand flats where other treats include large Bluefin, Golden, Yellow Dot, Green Spot and Giant Trevally and Indo-Pacific Permit.
