Indian Ocean jewel

Imagine an island as untouched as the one Robinson Crusoe discovered. Mix that with barefoot chic and world-class facilities and you have Constance Moofushi Resort.

Myrthe Strijbos from The Style Junkies writes about discovering the Jewel Island.

As a frequent traveller I love unspoiled places where you get a taste of seclusion and sheer beauty.

The Maldives were always number one on my must-go travel list. This gorgeous country is, by most estimations, the closest you get to paradise on earth and the ideal choice for lovebirds.

In March my boyfriend and I visited the Indian Ocean jewel and discovered it for ourselves. I can easily say that for experiencing that feeling of going back to nature, indulging in sun drenched days and star studded nights, the Maldives is where it’s at.

The journey by seaplane to this barefoot idyll is a pleasure for the eye – breathtaking views of the azure blue sea, sandy little islands surrounded by turquoise reefs and glorious skies.

For a dive junkie, this laid-back yet luxurious resort is a paradise, and considered one of the best dive spots in the South Ari Atoll. And you can see why when you catch your first glimpse of the spectacular soft coral reefs and the giant mantas gliding by.

As you would expect, the accommodation is as spectacular as the location. A quarter of the 110 thatched villas are on the beach, while the water villas and senior water villas are on two jetties, each with a stairway down to the azure lagoon and a private deck.

At Moofushi they capture the best tropical ambiance, the beauty of the location, and the exotic flavours of the Maldives.

And they’ve rewritten the rule book on all-inclusives. Opt for the Crystal Package and you get all meals at Manta Restaurant, drinks (yes, as much cocktails and wine as you want!), mini bar, and more.

What else is there to do…

Reach the perfect state of well being and deep relaxation at Le Spa Constance, and for yoga try a lesson from yogi Manish. Check out the water sport centre for surfing, kayaking or sailing. Meanwhile, back on dry land you can siesta on hammocks, chill by the pool or just soak up the sun… Atoll life is good.

How to improve your golf game with pilates

If you’re looking to improve your golf game, pilates can help you to build core stability, develop better balance, flexibility and mental focus. Golf pros including Tiger Woods, David Duval and Annika Sörenstam all incorporate pilates into their regular training regimes.

Guest blogger, Nicole Bausch – registered physiotherapist, MCSP, certified pilates instructor and golf enthusiast – gives an insight into using pilates to improve your game.

Pilates is the ideal partner for all golfers looking to improve their performance and stay healthy on the greens.

Over the last century the golf swing has changed and a modern swing requires a wide shoulder turn while restricting turn in the hips, building torque in the muscles of the lower back and shoulders. Any physical restrictions that impact on ability to swing the club efficiently will limit your ability to improve your game.

Golf and Pilates share the same basic principles, both requiring flexibility and strength.

Pilates can help to:

  • increase flexibility of the hips to allow the rotation of the trunk over the hips in the backswing and the follow-through
  • increase flexibility in the upper back to allow the torso to rotate over a fixed, stable lower body
  • build strength in the posterior hip muscles to provide a stable lower body for the trunk to rotate over in the backswing, and to allow a firm lead side for the golfer to hit against in the follow-through
  • build strength of the deep abdominal and core stabilising muscles to stabilise the spine and dissipate the forces that are generated during the swing, as well as helping the golfer maintain the posture during the swing to help them keep the swing on the correct plane
  • build strength in the muscles that stabilise the shoulder girdle, which includes the shoulder joint itself and the shoulder blades. This will allow the golfer to keep the arms connected to the trunk, which allows efficient transfer of energy from the body to the arms and ultimately to the club head.

Right to the core
Having a strong core allows a golfer to achieve better positioning over the ball, giving an improved swing. When the golfer emphasises initiating from the core through peripheral limbs, power is generated from the ground up, which leads to an increase in club head speed so the golfer will drive the ball further.

Preventing injury
Pilates is not only beneficial for golfers who want to improve their performance, it is also effective in reducing the risk of injuries. Lower back pain is the most common complaint followed by elbow and shoulder injuries.

Lower back pain can occur as a result of the increased rotation and extension in the modern golf swing. Pilates can help increase the range of motion in the trunk and hips, to decrease the incidence of golf related low back pain. Pilates can also help to enhance core stability and strength to decrease the risk of fatigue.

Preparation
Warming up before golfing has been shown to decrease the incidence of golf injuries. Pilates exercises and stretching can be integrated before hitting the green.

Shiseido Eudermine

Shiseido Eudermine, original at the front

Shiseido began as a single prescription pharmacy in the Ginza district of Tokyo in 1872, and has since become one of the most influential skin care houses in the world.

The products are developed with the most advanced science and uncompromising qualities, offering our guests the very best in skincare.

Eudermine elixir

To celebrate the 140th anniversary, Shiseido has brought back their first ever skin care product within its original packaging, created in 1897. Eudermine is an elixir to soothe and hydrate the skin and give a cushioned plumpness back to the complexion.

Within the skincare regime, Shiseido has always used a Japanese Beauty Secret, or ‘softener’. Once you have cleansed your skin, Shiseido recommends you use a softener to balance the skin within and allow your moisturiser to penetrate further into the skin and have a longer lasting effect.

At Shiseido spas, including at Constance Belle Mare Plage, Ephelia and Lemuria, guests can enjoy the newly created 140th Anniversary Spa Experiences. These are  3 different packages, offering the very best in spa treatments and massage discoveries. A Spa must have.

Constance Hot List: London’s coolest restaurants

With the Olympics just round the corner, the spotlight falls on London this summer. Here’s our pick of the hippest new restaurants in the capital.

1. Tramshed

Inside the Tramshed

Situated in a beautiful Grade II listed building is the latest venture from Mark Hix, former chef director of Caprice Holdings.

Bang on trend with its pared-back menu of chicken and steak, this is a simple idea delivered to perfection.

Highlights include the perfect roast chicken (served head down, tail up) and dry-aged steak, served on its own or over salad. The massive Damien Hirst ‘Cock and Bull’ sculpture hangs above the centre of the room.

Visit the Tramshed website or follow them on Twitter @the_tramshed. And read the review by Time Out of Hix’s Tramshed.

2. Burger and Lobster

Heading up the trend for simple menus is the massively successful Burger and Lobster in Mayfair. The stripped-back menu in this buzzing, tightly packed spot has been a huge hit since it opened at the end of last year.

Highlights include actually getting a table – expect a long wait although you can head to a nearby bar and they’ll text you when there’s space. It’s worth the wait though – dine on whole lobster, lobster rolls or delectable burgers.

Follow them on Twitter @Londonlobster

3. Mari Vanna

Opulent in a kitsch kind of way, Mari Vanna serves up the sort of Russian food your grandmother would cook.

This new Russian restaurant in Knightsbridge is scoring high with those hankering after a taste of home, and fashionistas looking for the next big thing. Take your pickings from the lunch or à la carte menus.

Visit the Mari Vanna website to find out more, or follow them on Twitter @marivannalondon.

4. Shrimpy’s

Contributing to the revival of King’s Cross is this latest opening from the folk behind the hugely successful Bistrotheque.

Situated at The Filling Station in N1, highlights at Shrimpy’s include the soft shell crab burger and snacks way above the norm – chicharrons with guacamole and plantains chips and dips.

Find out more from Shrimpy’s website.

5. Bubbledogs

If champagne and hot dogs sound like an odd combination, hold your judgement until you’ve checked out the hottest new opening this month on Charlotte Street – Bubbledogs.

Run by husband and wife team James Knappett and Sandia Chang (both have worked at The Berkeley, Nomo and Per Se) the menu includes 10 hot dog options served with lashings of champagne.

Find out more on Bubbledogs website or follow them on Twitter @bubbledogsuk.
